Background:

Office environments typically generate large amounts of waste- a considerable percentage of which is recyclable. Unfortunately, many recyclable items such as paper, cans and drink bottles are simply thrown out with the rest of the waste.

Problems and opportunities:

1. Apathy among staff is a possible barrier to active recycling in an office environment.

2. A lack of convenient means for recycling may be a source for the overall lack of motivation to recycle in the workplace.

3. Under desk space is limited, but standard desk rubbish bins are typically not filled to capacity.

4. Standard desk bins could be used as a means for sorting recyclable waste.

Key question:

How can recycling be promoted in an office environment while making it more convenient for both office workers and cleaning staff?

Final proposal included:

1. Flat pack product produced from die-cutting sheet material- either plastic or cardboard which fits inside existing bins.

2. Branding opportunities.

3. Low production cost.

4. Assembly which can be done easily by office workers in hopes that they will get behind the eco-friendly theme of the project and do their part to actively recycle.
