Background:

For the most part, saddle design and manufacturing has remained unchanged over the centuries. This was the starting point for a local entrepreneur who saw an opportunity to develop and manufacture a new range of innovative saddles.

Problems and opportunities:

1. Updating the processes utilised in traditional saddlemaking could streamline the manufacturing process.

2. Updating the materials and components used in traditional saddlemaking could result in lighter, better fitting saddles along with a unique point of difference.

3. Ergonomic research could improve riding conditions for both horse and rider.

Key question:

How can traditional saddlemaking techniques be combined with new materials and processes to provide an improved riding experience for both horse and rider?

Final product range included:

1. New flexible fitting system which could adjust to a wide range of horse body types.

2. Updated manufacturing techniques and materials including injection moulding and foam rubber which not only streamlined the saddlemaking process but also provided a more comfortable riding experience.

3. Synthetic materials which not only provided a new look and feel, but resulted in a lighter saddle which also minimised the need for saddle maintenance.
