Background:

Initial research included observations and interviews with surgeons and nurses to understand how existing scalpel handles were used- before, during and after surgical procedures.

Problems and opportunities:

1. Blade removal after surgery was a potentially hazardous procedure.

2. There was no standard disposal method for used blades.

3. Scalpel handle lacked balanced feel.

4. Distal end of handle was sometimes used as a probe during surgery.

Key question:

How can a surgeon's skill be enhanced during surgery and blade removal / disposal be made safer and more convenient after surgery?

Final proposal included:

1. Tapered handle at distal end to improve ergonomics as well as facilitate use as a probe.

2. Concave grip area to work in conjuction with disposal unit for safe blade removal.

3. Disposal unit to work in conjunction with scalpel grip area for safe, easy blade removal as well as a practical means for disposal.
