
Background:
New Zealand has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. As a result, the Cancer Society of New Zealand is very proactive in raising awareness levels regarding the dangers of sun exposure.
​To support its ongoing effort to promote sunscreen use, the SUNFUN sunscreen applicator "ribbon" was developed for the Cancer Society of New Zealand as a practical means for applying sunscreen.
Problems and opportunities:
1. When applying sunscreen, certain areas of the body- especially the back, are difficult to reach and as a result sometimes go unprotected.
2. Existing applicators tended to be inconvenient and messy.
3. A new applicator had the potential to add value to the Cancer Society brand alongside its sunscreen products.
Key question:
How can sunscreen use be promoted while making its application more convenient?
Final proposal included:
1. Convenient, ergonomic applicator "ribbon"
2. SANTOPRENE- a thin, oil resistant material which facilitates easy application, cleanup and product longevity as well as low cost production.
3. Reusable packaging making the rolled up, compact size of the "ribbon" a convenient, easy to use beach accessory.
